Karen is an AHRC Leadership Fellow based at the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research, Birmingham School of Media. Her current research focuses on diversity and expertise development in the contemporary craft economy, in collaboration with Crafts Council UK. She is particularly interested in issues around diversity and inequalities in craft work and the wider creative industries. Her previous work with Crafts Council UK looked at how social media platforms could support diversity in the craft economy.
Karen completed her PhD in December 2017, in which she explored the politics of expertise in cultural labour. She has published various journal articles and book chapters about expertise in cultural work, and has presented her research at conferences around the world.
