Writing With Noise Workshop

On Thursday 30 January, upstairs at the Woodman pub, the RIFFs team collaborated with the Ideas of Noise festival on the 2nd Writing With Noise workshop. The workshop featured New York trumpeter Nate Wooley in a wide ranging discussion of his various projects and approaches to improvised music. He talked about problems of developing a distinctive musical language, alternative practices of music making, the meaning of tradition for experimental artists, new models of virtuosity, and the physical challenges of contemporary music. Participants then set about producing original musical scores in response to Nate’s comments, particularly focusing on the use of text and colour. Once these were complete, Nate performed a selection of the scores and talked about the issues they raised for him as an improviser.
