Research Fellow

Souraj is a Leverhulme Trust postdoctoral fellow based at the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media. His research project focuses on the uses of memes in the Indian subcontinent and its connection to various contemporary socio-technological issues. He is particularly interested in how participatory digital cultures are shaped out of negotiations between internet users and technology-politics-infrastructure.

Souraj completed his PhD in December 2020 from the Department of Film Studies at the University of St Andrews. In his thesis, he looked at how postmillennial Bollywood films are increasingly becoming hybrid new media objects and how it has led to the rise of a new spectatorial culture on the internet around these films. Souraj’s broader interest areas are digital media and cultures, participatory media, social media and infrastructures, and Bollywood films.
