Media and Place: Work in Progress With: Dima Saber, Dave Harte, Lisa Deml, Sam Coley, Rachel-Ann Charles and Yemisi Akinbobola
Our works in Progress session will consist of a series of short (5-10 minute) presentations reporting on current research from members of our Media and Place cluster.
Speakers:
Dima Saber is Reader in Media and Cultural Studies, she is also Associate Director for External Funding and Research Development at the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research. Her research is focussed on media depictions of conflict in post-war and post-revolution contexts, and on the role of archival records in identity building processes.
Dave Harte is Associate Professor in Journalism and Media Studies. He researches the emerging trend of local community ‘hyperlocal’ news websites and has published widely on the subject. He has also published on the interaction between the creative sector and higher education and has managed funded research projects focused on the creative and cultural sector in the UK and Europe.
Lisa Deml is a Midlands4Cities funded PhD student who holds degrees in Art History and Philosophy. Initially trained as a journalist, she subsequently worked for public cultural institutions and non-profit organisations internationally, including Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin, Haus der Kunst, Munich, and Ashkal Alwan, Beirut.
Sam Coley is Associate Professor (International) for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media. He is also Award Leader for the MA Media Production, where he teaches a range of undergraduate and postgraduate audio production modules. His practice-based PhD explored freelance music documentary production in the commercial radio industry, and he has written about fandom and new participatory cultures in radio documentary production.
Rachel-Ann Charles is a Course Director on the MA in Global Media Management and she lectures across undergraduate courses within the School of Media. She has studied social action community media within a Trinidad and Tobago context; and is currently exploring a few emerging issues within the Caribbean Diaspora community.
