Dr Oliver Carter in conversation

Join Professor Paul Long as he talks to Dr. Oliver Carter about his latest book Making European Cult Cinema: Fan Enterprise in an Alternative Economy. Oliver’s book explores how fan production can be understood as an alternative economy of fan enterprise, through a close look at how fans produce and distribute artefacts and commodities related to cult films. Built around interviews and ethnographic observations, and even the author’s own fan enterprise, the book creates an innovative theoretical framework that draws in ideas from cultural studies and political economy to introduce the concept of an ‘alternative economy’ as a way to understand fan production.

Also, Oliver will launch the Film Fanzine Archive, which he has recently donated to Birmingham City University’s Archive. The Film Fanzine Archive contains a range of fan produced magazines that Oliver collated as part of his primary research for Making European Cult Cinema, including titles such as Absurd, Blood and Black Lace, and Video Watchdog. It is anticipated that the archive will be used by students, researchers and the general public, leading to future research projects into this oft forgotten period of alternative publishing.
