Information: First published in 2003 and a leader in the analyses of popular culture in South Asia, its diasporas, and beyond, we at South Asian Popular Culture welcome you to our global in-person conference looking ahead to the next 20 years at: “Bees Saal Baad: The Past, Present and Possible Futures of SAPC.”

Keynote Speaker: The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr Amit Rai. Dr Rai is Reader in Creative Industries and Arts Organisation and Programme Director for MA Creative Industries and Arts Organisations at Queen Mary’s College, University of London. He is the author of Rule of Sympathy: Race, Sentiment, and Power, 1750-1860 (Palgrave, 2002) and Untimely Bollywood: Globalisation and India’s New Media Assemblage (Duke University Press/Oxford University Press, 2009). His extensive scholarly output includes numerous articles in prestigious journals worldwide such as “The Affect of Jugaad: Frugal Innovation and Postcolonial Practice in India’s Mobile Phone Ecology” in Environment and Planning D: Society and Space(2015). Additionally, Jugaad Time: Ecologies of Everyday Hacking in India was published by Duke University Press in February 2019.

Conference Programme: Day 1 of the conference will celebrate 21 years of the journal, with pre-constituted panels of 3×20 minutes presentations, roundtable discussions, and individual papers.

Day 2 will have scholars from across the globe critically discuss the landmark popular Indian film Sholay as it approaches its 50th year in 2025.

We also cordially invite you to the pre-conference meet & greet drinks on the evening of 23 July at The Shell, P063, Parkside Building, BCU City Centre Campus.

Lastly, to really jazz things up and celebrate 21 years of the journal, we invite you to a DJ evening of song and dance on July 24 at the Eastside Jazz Club, BCU City Centre Campus. Don’t forget your dancing shoes and please list in the space below one upbeat, celebratory song you would like played at the event.
